This simple little box keeps your alternator working after the cluster has been removed.
If the gauge cluster has been removed for a digital dash, the alternator will no longer function because it loses its trigger signal from the cluster. This trigger is transmitted through the battery warning light built into the cluster.
Can't I just give the alternator trigger power directly?
The battery warning light is crucial because it helps regulate the current to the alternator trigger, protecting the vehicle from backfeeding issues. This protection is essential because when the key is in the "on" position and the engine is off, the alternator does not spin, meaning the cooling fans are not operating. If the current is not properly resisted, it could overheat the voltage regulator, leading to significant damage and serious issues.
WARNING: Operating, servicing and maintaining a passenger vehicle or off-road vehicle can expose you to chemicals including engine exhaust, carbon monoxide, phthalates, and lead, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. To minimize exposure, avoid breathing exhaust, do not idle the engine except as necessary, service your vehicle in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves or wash your hands frequently when servicing your vehicle.
