Everything you need to know about Subaru Oil Pumps

Flatirons Tuning Tech Tips - Everything you need to know about Subaru Oil Pumps

If you are looking to install or replace the oil pump on your Turbocharged EJ Series Subaru, more than likely you have at least come across three different options.

Those are the Subaru 10mm Oil Pump, the Subaru 11mm Oil Pump, and the JDM Subaru 12mm Oil pump.

But which one is best for your build or your engine?

This is actually a more difficult question to answer than it may seem, so we put together this video to hopefully answer some of the questions that come up, and give you some guidance as to which pump would be best for you.

A discussion of Oil Pumps, Oil Pressure, and Shimming Subaru pumps

A few days ago, our friend and fellow racer Victor Kuhns from DM Rally was in town, and he has been working on building up a new engine for his race car to run up Pikes Peak.  One of the aspects of his build that we have been talking about and helping him with has been the oil pressure on his new engine, and Victor has done a tone of testing of different oil pumps and configurations.  He has found a lot of good information now that he has tried a number of different set-ups, and we were able to talk to him for a bit about all that he has now found out.

One of the most interesting things that we discuss is the process of putting a shim into a Subaru oil pump.

Thanks for watching, and a very big thank you to Victor for spending some time with us!

Does Oil Temperature effect Oil Pressure?

One of the keys to keeping your engine reliable is oil pressure.  When we had Jeremy from Money Shift Rally on the Podcast a few weeks ago to talk about all the data he had collected from his Rally car, this was one of the first things that we wanted to talk about.

So how does oil temperature effect oil pressure?

We have some great information for you about this relationship in this clip, and if you want to know more, be sure to check out the full episode of the Podcast.

Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

Can't get your Subaru Oil Pump to Prime? What to check and a possible solution

Right before you start your engine for the first time, one of the last things that you typically do is crank the engine over to build a little oil pressure.  On a Subaru, this normally means cranking the engine over for a couple seconds a few times until the oil pressure light turns off.

But what if that doesn't happen?

In the course of working with Allen from Subie Recycler on his build, this is the problem that Allen ran into, and through the years we have worked with other customers that have run into this issue as well.

But this time around, we were not only able to find a solution, but we were also able to get an idea of what may be causing this issue in some cases.  And because we thought that this might be really helpful knowledge, we wanted to pass it on the community.
