Starting with the basics, Cobb's downpipe replaces the two factory catalytic converters located directly after the turbocharger. These parts are commonly called the downpipe and 3rd cat or mid-pipe cat. Cobb's downpipe has been specifically designed for an OEM-like fit and will bolt directly to the COBB Cat-Back, the factory cat-back, or any aftermarket system designed to bolt to the factory catalytic converter.
 
It should also be noted that this system may not be legal for street use in some states, which is the case with ANY aftermarket exhaust that replaces ANY emissions equipment.
 
Cobb's downpipe is built as one complete unit and is comprised of 4 major design elements; a precision Investment-Cast 304 SS Turbo Outlet Housing, 3" 304 SS Mandrel Bent Piping, an optional SS Metallic Substrate Catalytic Converter, and a laser-cut 304 SS OEM style flange with integrated flex.
 
Through the use of a high quality Stainless Steel 304 casting, Cobb is able to provide a part that not only has the proper internal shape necessary for optimal performance and turbo response but also provide an extremely durable unit. Another advantage to this design is the reduction in exhaust noise entering the passenger cabin. When metal is stretched and pulled to create the bellmouth shape, it actually reduces the wall thickness of the metal. This in turn produces a "tin-ny" sound that can easily be heard in the cabin. Cobb's thick wall casting does not suffer from this problem. Furthermore, the thicker stainless steel casting helps keep more heat in the exhaust which reduces underhood temps and improves performance by maintaining high exhaust gas energy as it leaves the turbocharger.
 
This system replaces both the stock downpipe section and final catalytic converter section. They will mate up perfectly to the stock or any aftermarket cat-back system designed to attach to the factory donut style flex gasket. A bung necessary to use the second factory O2 sensor is included. In addition, an auxillary O2 sensor bung is located near the turbo in a position that's easy-to-reach from the engine compartment for wide-band O2 sensor use during tuning sessions.
 
Cobb uses state-of-the-art metallic substrate catalytic converters in their catted down pipes.  These metal substrate cats are designed for optimal durability and flow so well, they pose virtually no HP reduction on most street cars. The high-flow catalytic converter is included in the STREET version.
 
All flanges, hangers, O2 sensor bungs, casting and piping are constructed 100% from 304SS. TIG welding used exclusively.
